WHAT WOULD IT BE LIKE TO CAPTURE A MOMENT OF WONDER, CONTEMPLATION, OR WARM NOSTALGIA? USING PORTRAITS, I INVITE YOU TO TAP INTO A HIDDEN TREASURE OF BEAUTIFUL FEELINGS AND BRING THEM TO THE CANVAS!

As a professional artist and teacher with decades of experience in everything from Photoshop to painting, I will share with you a variety of tools and techniques to help you draw dreamy portraits with meaning. To do this, I will focus on three wonderful feelings – wonder, nostalgia, and contemplation – and then I will demonstrate how I express each feeling in a portrait combining graphite pencil, pastel, acrylic paint, and collage.

Lastly, I will provide image resources for you to use, however; feel free to find your own images that express your own feelings about each topic. In fact, I encourage it!

These are portraits not just about the outer beauty we see in the world, but about the inner beauty we find within ourselves.

Here's a description of each of our special projects:

Warm up -DRAWING THE FACE

To get us warmed up, I will demonstrate and discuss facial proportions, shading, and how to create realistic faces. Go from flat cartoon faces to 3-dimensional life-like faces, using shading and observation of form. You will love my tips and tricks!

portrait 1 - Wonderment

In this portrait, we will paint a face to express the experience of “wonder” and awe. The wide-format allows room to play with long flowing hair and whimsical landscape - where you can paint and collage elements of your own choosing to create a unique and beautiful expression of wonder!

portrait 2 - Nostalgia

In this portrait, we explore the notion of nostalgia in a romantic sense. Expressing that lovely moment when a treasured memory swells in our hearts. I select a face that is reminiscent of the old Victorian portraits of women. We draw it, collage it and colorize it like a gorgeous vintage photo. I also show you how to create a stunning, textured backdrop reminiscent of vintage lace or an old stucco wall.

portrait 3 - Contemplation

Contemplation, like mindfulness, is a state of mind or an awareness that gently focuses on an idea or an image that brings about a sense of well-being. In this portrait, I select a woman who seems to be meditating and expound upon it. I show you how to shade and tint the face, as well as how to create a soft dreamy background to reflect her mood. This uplifting and hopeful project will sure to inspire you and bring about a wonderful sense of inner peace.

Who is this class for?

This class is designed for people who love drawing faces and learning how to mix them with other media. I do provide options for people at different skill levels too! For example, instead of drawing the face from observation, you may trace it instead. Also, one of the lessons lends itself to collage instead of drawing, if you prefer. I do set the bar high though and load you with a lot of unique techniques to inspire you.

Think of each portrait as an opportunity to explore beautiful feelings and grow your skills as an artist!

My goal is to be inclusive and have fun, but also to encourage creativity, thoughtfulness, and growth.

If this sounds like you, I hope you will join me!
